Sensory Friendly Performance: ELF, Jr.

Sensory Friendly Performance: ELF, Jr.

Tapestry Theatre Co invites you to our first sensory friendly performance.  We recognize that many families who live with differing abilities feel they cannot attend live performances.  The Dec. 2, 2 p.m. performance will provide a welcoming environment and access to the theatre arts.  Our overall goal is to make sure no one feels left out, judged or mistreated. We aim to bring a performance, with an all abilities cast, to those who are and are not comfortable in a typical performance setting.

PLEASE REPLY TO ELIZABETH GOODRICH

tapestrycstc@gmail.com

Please let her know right away if you are interested in purchasing tickets, and how many you wish to purchase. And if you cannot afford tickets, the ACL and Tapestry have some limited scholarships available

What makes this a sensory friendly performance?

§  House lights will remain at 35%

§  Microphone volumes will be decreased

§  Staff  will be easily accessible for any questions or problems

§  Involuntary movements and noises are expected and welcomed

§  There is a designated movement area for anyone who feels they need to move during the performance

§  A comfortable seating area with pillows will be provided

§  Actors will adapt their performance, as they are able, to include and accept changes in the environment, including movement and noises from the audience

Tapestry Theatre Company brings inclusive theatre to life in Boulder County by providing local actors the chance to shine on stage.  Elf Jr's cast is multi-generational,  casting actors of all abilities.  This unique model features a shared theatre performance, highlighting the strengths of all actors, while challenging societal perceptions about people with disabilities.  Tapestry cultivates a welcoming, safe, and inclusive community, ensuring everyone has fun experiencing the magic of theatre. Our participants discover talents they never knew they had, make connections with people unlike themselves, and form long-lasting friendships embracing our philosophy of:  Applauding All Abilities!

Sensory Friendly Nutcracker Performance

Sensory Friendly Nutcracker Performance

Colorado Conservatory of Dance presents a Sensory-Friendly Nutcracker Performance

Colorado Conservatory of Dance is in its seventh year of offering Ballet Expressions – a program which uses dance to build critical developmental skills and physical strength and flexibility for children with special needs ranging from Cerebral Palsy to Down Syndrome. Building on their expertise with this core program, CCD has developed a theatre experience for people with special needs. CCD is in its fourth year of offering this magical experience for those with sensory, social and learning disabilities

For this rare opportunity, however, CCD will alter the normal house rules, fostering the opportunity for families with a special needs family member to feel welcomed in a theatre setting.  The performance will feel and look the same as our performances which are open to the general public, but will allow for reactions that would normally be seen as distracting in a typical theatre experience.

  • Sound levels will be adjusted to a moderate, consistent level to avoid unpredictable loud sounds.
  • House lights will be left up to avoid total darkness.
  • Guests of Honor will be encouraged to bring manipulatives into the theatre.
  • Guests of Honor may react to the story on the stage in the way that feels right to them. They may stand up, walk around, take breaks, etc. as needed.
  • Seating will be limited to no more than half the house (300 seats) to ensure each audience member has adequate room.

Audience members also have the opportunity to meet the Nutcracker Prince, Clara, and many other characters from the ballet after the show for autographs and photos to complete the magical experience.

Building Cooperative Behaviors: A Free Introduction to Behavior Analysis

Building Cooperative Behaviors: A Free Introduction to Behavior Analysis

Building Cooperative Behaviors: A Free Introduction to Behavior Analysis

Jeff Kupfer, PhD, Board Certified Behavior Analyst

In order to build cooperative behaviors in others, we must learn to change our own behavior patterns and practices. This class provides a brief overview of selected evidence-based behavior principles based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). We will review the dangers of using coercive and punitive methods to change behavior, and will focus on positive alternatives.

Parents, Caregivers, Professionals, Educators/Teachers and Community Members will learn to use Cooperative Behavior Building methods for behavior change by:

  • Recognizing and understanding the five principles of behavior to enhance relationships

  • Distinguishing between proactive and reactive methods and how these two approaches result in diverse outcomes

  • Drawing upon Cooperative Behavior Building methods to increase positive behaviors and decrease challenging or problematic behaviors
