Autism Society of Boulder County Hosts Life Care Planning Workshop for Parents of Special Needs Children

The response to the June ASBC workshop--Special Needs Trusts and Estate Planning for Families with Special Needs Children, with attorney Wendi Temkin--was so great that we have added a second presentation this summer on a similar topic.

On August 27, ASBC and FAP Life Care Consultants, LLC, will present Protecting Your Child's Future: A Workshop for Families with Children with Special Needs.

The journey of parents of children with disabilities and the professionals who advise them includes planning for the family's future. Because families are often continually overwhelmed by the responsibilities of the present moment, developing a comprehensive future plan is habitually relegated to a to-do list.

Comprehensive life care planning encompasses many areas of concern to families about their children, including independence, financial well-being, quality of life, housing, education and employment. Comprehensive planning requires a team of professionals. Estate planning is the only tool that will ensure that the family's assets will flow properly to all of the children once the parents are gone.

In this workshop, you will learn, among other things:

  • why changes in laws make comprehensive planning today critically important;
  • why your financial plan must take your child's special needs into account;
  • how to leave your heirs what you want, when you want, and the way you want-- there are options; and
  • how to convey instructions to those who follow you to properly care for your child.

Presenters at this workshop include Melissa J. Edelman, financial advisor and the only Chartered Special Needs Consultant in Colorado; Laura A. Mathews, J.D., an attorney with Rumler, Tarbox, Leyden Law Corp., PC; and Betty Lehman, life care consultant, former Executive Director of the Autism Society of Colorado, and the parent of an adult with special needs.
