Compliance and Attitude: Improving Both in Your Child with a Disability

Each session will be held in the Autism Society of Colorado's training room, which is in the basement (level 1) of the First Bank building at 550 S. Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood.

This course is designed for parents and others who wish to increase the compliance of children who have any type of disability.

In this course, the participants will learn several procedures for increasing the compliance of a child with a disability. The participants will be given opportunities to practice these procedures and will receive feedback so that they are ready to use them when they complete the training.

Because timeout can be used in one of the procedures, using timeout effectively will also be covered in this training. The following will be included in the timeout section of the training:

* Considerations for using timeout.
* How to solve problems commonly associated with timeout, such as a child refusing to go to timeout or a child screaming and tearing up things while in timeout.
* What to do when a child becomes old enough that timeout is no longer appropriate.

The cost for the course is $75 per person, and the course is limited to 30 participants. You may register for this course by visiting www.towersbehavior.com and clicking on "Public Courses."

To learn more about this course, you may call 970-554-1886 or e-mail sam@towersbehavior.com .

Imagine! Celebration Dinner and Auction

Now preparing for its 9th year, the Imagine! Celebration, the annual fundraising event of the Imagine! Foundation, is having a makeover! First, the location is changing from the Millennium Harvest House Boulder to the Radisson Conference Center in Longmont. Because Imagine! actually serves more individuals in Longmont than in Boulder, the Foundation board of directors felt it was time to take advantage of the increased space and bring focus to Imagine!'s Longmont presence by moving the venue this year. The event at the Radisson will be held Friday, January 23, 2009, from 5:30-10:00 PM.

Also new this year is a more robust committee chaired for the first time in several years by a Foundation board member - Colene Van Winkle. Committee members have already set their sights on some 230 auction items, including many new items in the favorite Live, Lodging, and Food & Wine categories.

Thanks to its popularity and proven results at last year's event, electronic bidding will make its second appearance! The Imagine! Foundation was one of the first non-profits in the area to try electronic bidding last January, and now it is showing up at more and more events. It's easy, fun, and allows guests to enter their bids on hand-held "tablets," check periodically to see what items they are winning, and find "bargains," all without having to leave their table or group. The online auction preceding the event will be featured for a third year.

This is just the beginning. Be sure to check the Imagine! website in December and January for more NEW items!

For more information contact Susan LaHoda or Heather Sabo.

Colorado DS/ASD Dual Diagnosis Education and Support Initiative

Ever feel like you're the only parent, caregiver, teacher or health care provider on the planet working with a child or adult with Down syndrome who has complex, concerning or confusing behaviors?

You are not alone!

A group, temporarily named the Colorado DS/ASD Dual Diagnosis Education and Support Initiative, is still in the planning stages; however things are well under way! This initiative is designed to reach out to parents, caregivers and professionals who have a child or adult in their lives (or professional practice) with DS/ASD and/or complex, concerning or confusing behaviors.

The three organizations collaborating on this much-needed initiative are the Autism Society of Colorado, the Denver Adult Down Syndrome Clinic, and Mile High Down Syndrome Association. Others already lending their enthusiastic support include dynamic experts in the field from the National Down Syndrome Congress, The Children's Hospital, and JFK Partners. To say that we are thrilled with the initial response to this project would be an understatement!

Save the Date!

Initial plans are being made to offer a "Kick Off" educational and planning event. Dr. Susan Hepburn (LCP), nationally recognized expert in the field of intervention for children/youth with autism and other disorders and director of research at JFK Partners, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, will be speaking to parents and professionals. Additionally, a panel of parents with children with dual diagnoses will be sharing their stories and answering questions. Plans are to break up participants into small groups at the end of the event so that everyone may voice their needs, hopes and suggestions for launching the support initiative for both families and providers. We will also be holding a "Name the Initiative" contest. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available!

Mark Your Calendars for Wednesday, January 28, 10 AM - 2 PM

IMPORTANT: We will be doing most of our communications for this project through email to save on printing and mailing costs. Please submit your email address to Robin Zaborek at robinz@mhdsa.org so we may add you to our mailing list. If you don't have email, please call Robin at 303-756-9979.

See you at the KICK OFF!
