March 13, March 20, March 27, April 17, and April 24
The  Autism Society of Colorado  and  Towers Behavior Services LLC   present
In-Home Interventions For Children With Autism
And/Or Another Developmental Disability

This class is designed for parents and others who wish to provide in-home educational and behavioral interventions to children with autism and/or another developmental disability.

Research has demonstrated that intensive intervention for children with disabilities yields very strong positive results throughout the child’s entire lifetime.  Parents and in-home services providers can be an essential part of making a dramatic, lifelong difference in the lives of children with disabilities.   This course will provide the participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to help build skills and decrease problem behavior in children with disabilities.  It will also provide them with the skills and knowledge necessary to work with professionals who provide Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) interventions in the home.

This course will provide training in the following areas:

  • The core characteristics of autism and related characteristics of autism.
  • Common characteristics of developmental disabilities.
  • How to understand why problem behavior occurs and how to intervene.
  • How to identify and change interactions of yours that might be triggering problem behavior.
  • How to identify and change situations in the environment that might be triggering problem behavior.
  • How to understand what your child is communicating through problem behavior and how to respond to this communication so that you don’t encourage further problem behavior.
  • How to help your child build the skills necessary to function as independently as possible.  Because building skills is so important for children with disabilities, approximately half of this course will be spent on this topic.  Among the topics covered in this portion of the training will be: (a) how to motivate the learner; (b) how to teach skills during the course of naturally occurring daily activities; (c) how to teach replacement behaviors, which are skills that will allow the child to achieve his or her goals without using problem behavior; (d) how to prompt effectively; and (e) how to shape behaviors.

Early in the training, each participant will be taught how to take direct observational data on problem behaviors.  The participants will then be given the opportunity to take data on a targeted behavior and bring the data back to class, where we will analyze the data and discuss possible interventions.

This class is scheduled to occur from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on March 13, March 20, March 27, April 17, and April 24, 2010, for a total of approximately 30 hours of instruction.   It will occur in the Autism Society of Colorado's training room, which is in the basement (level 1) of the First Bank building at 550 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, CO.

The cost of the class is $395 per person for those who preregister by March 11.  The cost for those who don’t preregister is $450.

You may register for this class by visiting  www.towersbehavior.com and clicking on “Public Courses.”  To learn more about this class may call Sam Towers at 303-803-0045 or e-mail him at  sam@towersbehavior.com.

GIFTEDNESS AND AUTISM: How to Develop the Child’s Strengths

Boulder Valley Gifted and Talented
in association with
Autism Society of Boulder County
presents
TEMPLE GRANDIN, PhD
GIFTEDNESS AND AUTISM: How to Develop the Child’s Strengths
April 5, 7:00—8:30 p.m.
Fairview High School Auditorium RSVP to programming@bvgt.org

Asperger's Syndrome is one of the conditions found on the autism spectrum. Children with Asperger’s Syndrome are described as having quite a range of abilities, as are gifted children. Most children with the disorder seem to have a special interest or ability which enables them to achieve quite extraordinary levels of performance in a specific area. Grandin advocates early intervention to address autism, and supportive teachers who can direct fixations of the child with autism in positive directions. Based on personal experience, Grandin will discuss:

- How and Why People with Autism Think Differently
- Economical Early Intervention Programs that Work
- How Sensory Sensitivities Affect Learning
- Behaviors Caused by a Disability vs. Just Bad Behaviors
- Teaching People with Autism to Live in an Unpredictable World
- Careers and Learning Work Skills

About Temple Grandin, PhD
Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is inarguably the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. Dr. Grandin was awarded her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989 and is currently a Professor at Colorado State University. She has been featured on major television programs, such as "ABC's Primetime Live", the "Today Show", "Larry King Live", "48 Hours" and "20/20" and written up in national publications, such as Time magazine, People magazine, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, and New York Times. Dr. Grandin is a past member of the board of directors of the Autism Society of America. Temple Grandin didn't utter a word until she was 3 1/2 years old. With the help of early education and a caring nanny, Grandin eventually learned to speak and flourish despite Asperger's Syndrome. Grandin has a lot to say about how to reach children on the autism spectrum and encourage them to meet their full potential. Read more about Temple Grandin at www.templegrandin.com

Mother’s Tea -- A Celebration With Purpose!

This remarkable celebration is all about honoring the spirit and devotion of some very special moms. Held in the grand ballroom of the Westin Tabor Center in downtown Denver, this year’s Mother’s Tea will feature a champagne reception complete with grand pianist and complimentary portraits by Scott T Photography. Attendees will enjoy a sumptuous luncheon and relaxing day of entertainment that will include a keynote speaker, a very exciting fashion show and numerous giveaways. The event will conclude with Celebrity Host, Dr. Stephanie Clements, announcing the winners of pamper packages for six, community-nominated, very deserving mothers. These elegantly prepared packages, which include spa services, dinner and an overnight getaway, are the perfect gift for mothers who so often place the needs of their children ahead of their own.

Deserving of Special Recognition

Over the years, UCP Colorado has witnessed the incredible difference that mothers make in the lives of their children with special needs. Whereas many moms wear many hats, these mothers’ challenges are uniquely diverse in the care and upbringing of their children. Their lives often revolve around medical appointments, special therapies and advocating for the inclusion of their children in the educational system and throughout their communities. Their stories of motherhood demonstrate the selfless and extraordinary commitment, love and sacrifice that help their children overcome the daily challenges they face.
